EMAIL

• Open your software offline and explore it. Can you find the Options or Preferences sections? These allow you to change the functions of your email facility. Tip: Look in the Edit or Tools drop-down menus.

• Identify someone with whom you can exchange test emails.

• Send, receive and forward an email message.

• Create a folder in which to store your email.

• Exchange a document or attachment with someone else. Try using a range of formats, not only those that you believe will work.

• Have you worked out how to tell when you are online and when offline? What signs and symbols are displayed on the desktop or within the software interface to indicate when you are connected?

WORLD WIDE WEB

• Find the address of a website you would like to visit. There are a number listed in this booklet on page 11; or you may find one from the latest copy of the New Zealand Education Gazette/Tututuku Korero.

• Having found the website, locate a link to another site or page. How many sites can you visit in five minutes?

• How can you tell when your browser is searching for, or downloading, information?
Tip: Look at the bottom left of the browser window.

• Use the navigation buttons to take you back to your home page.
Note: Did you notice that the pages appeared on the screen more quickly when you navigated back? This is because they are temporarily stored in the memory of your computer.

• Enter the address of another site and add it to your Favourites or Bookmarks.

SEARCHING

• Find a search engine on the World Wide Web.

• Find the help or search tips area that will be contained within the search engine site.

• If possible, print out these pages for future reference.

• Identify a topic for which you wish to find a relevant site.

• What possible keywords could be used to locate this site on the World Wide Web?

• Refine the list of keywords to the most specific ones.

• First, search on one word. Your results or hits may be grouped in tens or hundreds. How relevant are your results?

• Refine your search using more keywords, using + or - and quotation marks. How relevant are your results now?

• Explore different combinations of keywords in your searching.

• Repeat the process using another search engine.
