SECTION 4: SEARCHING

Key points

The following key points are covered in this section of the video. You may wish to discuss or reflect on these points after seeing this section of the programme.

• You use a search engine to help you locate topic-specific websites when you do not have an address (URL) or because you simply wonder what sites there are about a particular subject.

• There is a range of search engines. The same search on different search engines will often achieve different results.

• To commence a search you must decide on an appropriate keyword or series of keywords which describes the kind of site you want to find.

• Using a plus sign (+) between keywords will link them together. The search engine will seek out only those sites where the linked words appear and produce results.

• Putting several words in quotation marks causes most search engines to look for those words in order.

• Adding a minus (-) sign before a word means that you can exclude that word in the search process, so that only sites that do not have that word turn up in the search results.

• For extended information on how to refine your searching techniques, look for search help tips which search engines will have published on their site; e.g. http://www.altavista.com/av/content/help.htm
